Coins Gallery
The Coins Collection of Lahore Museum, comprises of 40,000 pieces. This is one of the largest collection of coins in the Indian subcontinent. It includes the earliest examples of punch-marked coins issued in the 6th Century BC during the time of the Achaemenian Empire (Ancient Persia).
The Coins Gallery represents almost all the ruling families of the region such as the Greco-Bactrian, Indo-Greek, Mauryan, Indo-Parthian, Kushan, Indo-Scythian, Huns, Hindu Shahia, Arabs, Ghaznavids, the Sultans, the Mughals, the Durranis, the Sikhs, the British and the modern coins of Pakistan. This gallery also holds coins belonging to the Umayyads and Abbasid period, and of various other Muslim rulers of Central Asia, Africa and the Indian subcontinent.
A collection highlight is the first coin issued by Mahmood of Ghazni in Lahore bearing the legend of Mahmoodpur, the new name given by Mahmood to Lahore, Also, the beautiful zodiac coins issued by the Emperor Jahangir. As a whole, the coin collection of the Museum is an invaluable treasure for the study of the political, economic, social and cultural history of the Subcontinent in chronological order as well as for the study of the development of coin-making technology.
