Hindu, Buddhist and Jain
This gallery is organized into four sections, objects with religious significance pertaining to Hinduism, Jainism and Buddhism are mapped by their geographic location. The four sections are works from Indian subcontinent, Nepal, Tibet and Burma with most objects belong to the late 19th and early 20th century, with some exceptions dating as early as the 7th Century.
Gallery highlights include a large Shiva lingam from the Jhelum region, a beautifully carved figure of Vishnu; a stone piece with sculpted figures of Shiva and Parvati dating from 7th or 8th Century and sculpture of Durga slaying the buffalo demon.
This gallery also presents Nepalese wood carvings, painted tankas, papier-mâché objects, metal work, jewelry, statues of gilded bronze predominantly representing the Tantric cult. The Tibetan works are comprised of sculptures, paintings and jewelry while the Burmese objects are lacquer work objects and a beautiful gilded Buddha sitting on a throne under three umbrellas.
